Abstract
Proper nouns are generally not thought to be translated for their identifying function. However, when translating into Japanese, which shows a phonetic and letter system that is different from European languages, it is more or less necessary to adapt names. Proper nouns are also modified or explained because of differences of culture and knowledge. The extent, to which the adaptation and modification occur, though, depends on various factors. One key factor is textual function of the text type. This paper investigates the influence of this factor upon the translation of names, both qualitatively and quantitatively. I compare two different text types, magazine as an informative and operative type and literature as an expressive type, and discuss the translation strategies of proper nouns from English and German into Japanese under the Functionalist approach.
