MULTILINGUALISM – ONE OF THE GREAT CHALLENGES OF THE EUROPEAN UNION

Abstract
One of the principles at the basis of the European Union – linguistic diversity – entails that institutions – and citizens alike – understand one another, while having to deal with 23 official languages throughout the EU territory, as well as 60 regional or minority languages. Taking into account the fact that all the European citizens – including the members of the European Parliament – have the fundamental right to express themselves in their own language, we are facing a tremendous task: interpreting and translating all the documents produced by the community institutions, amounting to more than one million pages per year.
