Abstract:
Our study approaches Ioan Slavici’s journalistic and political activity, at the end of the 19

century and the beginning of the 20

of school books activated in a very complex historical context marked by the process of formation
and completion of state unity in Eastern and Central Europe. He strongly opposed the politics of
assimilation and denationalization developed by the central authorities from Budapest, but he
permanently militated for tolerance and mutual understanding between Romanians, Hungarians
and the other nationalities within the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
