Abstract
The present paper, entitled
Ioan Slavici, Budulea Taichii and Natsume Sōseki, Kokoro
in terms of revealing the similarities between two writers contemporary in the IInd half of the XIXth
century and the beginning of the next one, yet living in very different geographical areas. The
current research deals with the problematics of the intellectual raised by Ioan Slavici and Natsume
Sōseki, against the background of deep political, social and cultural changes. The intellectual is the
witness and also the barometer of the contradictions characteristic to the mentioned epoch of
spiritual crisis, which, although lived in constant fret of awareness, ultimately brings forth
universal ethical conflicts. The Romanian and the Japanese writer try to grasp the mistery
surrounding each destiny, in order to understand the meaning of life. The frailty of the human
being, the precarious nature of life, the uncertainty of a continually changing world are intensely
felt by the two men of letters and, as a result of that, the reference point they try to adopt regards
the confucianist ethics, as both of them adopt a direct or indirect standpoint towards this code of
moral values.
