Abstract
Having his three auto-biographical novels published abroad first and only later on in his
own country, the Evangelical priest Eginald Schlattner – born in Arad – is considered by the
critique as the best known contemporary novelist from Romania. After the great Saxon emigration
in 1990-1991, and with only five Saxons left in the whole village, he continued to fulfill his duties
as a priest at the Evangelical church of Rosia (Rothberg) – Sibiu, „only for God and for myself” as
he often declares. Better known abroad, Schlattner is a proud ambassador of his country –Romania, where he had the chance to develop as a Saxon in a tolerant multi-ethnic and multicultural
environment.
