Abstract
A Romanian scholar who belongs to the wide world, a fierce theoretician of language,
linguist and philosopher from the post cultural period, a philosopher scholar armed with an
infallible logic, critical sense, rigour and especially originality, a servant of truth in science,
universal spirit who incorporated into the universal vision the Romanian language. These are a few
of the characteristic features of the personality that once was Eugen Coseriu.
He comes from Moldavia, over the Prut River, as a result of the annexation of Basarabia in
1940 he was forced to leave his country. After a year of studentship at the university from Iasi, he
left to Italy where he attended the universities from Padova, Milan and Rome. Doctor in philology
(1944) and philosophy (1949) he was initially lector at the University of Milan and he taught
linguistics at the faculty from Montevideo. In 1963 he moved to Germany, being a professor at the
University of Tubingen.
Elected member of several academies (Brazil, Norway, Germany), he was kept under a deep
silence in the era of Romanian totalitarism. In 1991 he was elected member of honour of the
Romanian Academy and Doctor Honoris Causa of Bucharest University.
