Abstract
The aim of this article is to present a British novel whose translation into Romanian in 1997 is of major importance for our national postmodern literature. We will a take a look into the English literature of the 1980’s, referring to one of Graham Swift’s most important novels, Waterland. We will analyze the postmodern character facing the void created by a society without aims, a society in which values start to disappear slowly, leaving the individual lost and astonished. We will concentrate on a character that cannot find the purpose of his/her existence and wanders on a pace that does not seem to have an end. Graham Swift’s novel translated into our language has answered to the tendencies of the Romanian society and individuals from the point of view of the ideas and the theme.
