Abstract:
Slavici went to Vienna in order to join the army as a volunteer to satisfy his military service.
On this occasion he attends the courses of the Law School at the University in Vienna .He attended
the lectures of some famous professors and took part, together with Mihai Eminescu, to the
activities of Romania Juna Society, that organized a festival at Putna monastery in August 1871.
Sustained by Mihai Eminescu he wrote short stories which he published in Convorbiri
Literare magazine.
His friendship with M. Eminescu gave him the opportunity to discuss certain literary and
philosophical problems which enlarged his spirit for a deeper understanding of things.
In the Romania Juna Society, Eminescu –as a secretary and Slavici – as a president fought
for the unity of soul of the Romanians abroad.
Like his friend Eminescu, Slavici becomes an adept of Junimea and Convorbiri Literare,
adopting a great part of the social and ethical ideas of their members. In Vienna the meetings of the
two writers became true lessons out of which, as Slavici himself said:’ I lighted myself,
undoubtfully, more than listening to the university lectures.’
