Abstract
In geometry, the space occupied by an object is represented in three dimensions. Time can be represented as a dimension. In Guillaume’s interpretation, the dimension reserved to the mental representation of time is a borrowed dimension. Linguistically, verbal systems from Greek, Latin and French are constructed in three dimensions. The representation of time in the framework of these systems offers the speaker a complete structure of verbal forms ordered in relation to one another.
Résumé
En observant le vocabulaire utilisé par Gustave Guillaume et en nous arrêtant sur des mots comme grandeur, dimension, hauteur, largeur, profondeur, point, ligne, plan, nous tenterons de montrer pour quelle raison il a eu recours à des notions spatiales et même géométrales pour expliquer ce qu’est la représentation du temps. La représentation du temps est le résultat d’une spatialisation impliquant minimalement une dimension. Le système verbal d’une langue indo-européenne a pour condition une spatialisation plus complexe, mettant en jeu deux ou trois dimensions. L’analyse proposée par Guillaume des systèmes verbaux du latin, du grec et du français montre que leur architecture repose sur un tel jeu de n dimensions.
Rezumat
În geometrie, spaţiul ocupat de un obiect este reprezentat în trei dimensiuni. Timpul poate fi reprezentat ca o dimensiune. În interpretarea lui Guillaume, dimensiunea rezervată reprezentării mintale a timpului este o dimensiune împrumutată. Din punct de vedere lingvistic, sistemele verbale din greacă, latină şi franceză sunt construite în trei dimensiuni. Reprezentarea timpului în cadrul acestor sisteme oferă vorbitorului o structură completă de forme verbale ordonate unele în funcţie de celelalte.
