THE PLACE AND FUNCTION OF THE ACCENT IN ITALIAN

Abstract
The purpose of the article is to describe the function of intensity accents in Italian and to demonstrate the predictability of their place for those interested in learning this language. I will insist on the function of main and secondary accents and on intonation in a comparative study of French and Italian starting from Alvaro Rocchetti (1980) and AISV researchers’ works (2000). This topic will be approached from both a diachronic and a synchronic point of view. The study shows the relationships existing between prosody, syntax, and meaning.
