Abstract
The notions of old and new, as dimensions of cultural attitudes, are related to each other in terms such as the rupture, identity/alterity, central and peripheral. In this endeavor, we will consider them from the perspective of the extra linguistic significations they earn, in the context of a Europe whose socio-cultural tectonics was and still is very active. For an applied discussion of the issue of cultural identity and its relation to the existence of the alterity, we choose the case of the writers of Romanian origin and French expression, for at least three reasons: on the one hand, the scope of this paradigm, on the other hand, its consistency and last but not least, the ease with which French literature has accepted them and with which they have assumed life into an adoptive language. Without claiming to have exhausted the subject, we will refer to the work of some of them, in an order than does not translate into an axiological option, but rather into a thematic and styistic affinity.
