Abstract: The aim of the following paper is to deliver a general presentation on the symbolism in Günther Grass‘ novel „Beim Häuten der Zwiebel“. The very title of the book underlines the fact that symbolism plays a significant role throughout the entire novel. The symbols are all the more so important as we are dealing with the novel in which the author unvails details of his personal past that are to shock his readership and the public opinion alike: his membership in the Waffen-SS. Although the novel has been, sometimes superficially, categorized as „autobiographical“, this paper wants to point out some of the elements that transform the novel into a literary masterpiece.
