Abstract

The current paper aims to reflect the filiation links connecting Camilo José Cela´s novel Nuevas andanzas y desventuras de Lazarillo de Tormes (1955) to a much broader tradition: the picaresque, whose most iconic textual representation is La vida de Lazarillo de Tormes y de sus fortunas y adversidades, published anonymously in 1554 in Burgos, Alcalá de Henares and Antwerp. The article sets out to discover and analyze the main traits of picaresque literature and the manner in which they are recreated in the modern text, while also highlighting the most significant changes operated in the target text (represented by the Romanian translation of Cela´s work, as well as that of traditional Lazarillo) in order to overcome idiomatic translation difficulties.
