Abstract

Nicolae Steinhardt (Bucharest, July 29, 1912 – Baia Mare, March 30, 1989) is a notorious name of Romanian culture, having a remarkable posthumous recognition. The source of this recognition is an exceptional biographical and literary evolution which, immediately after the fall of communism, was recovered and was understood by his posterity as an ethic landmark. Nicolae Steinhardt’s most important writing is “Jurnalul fericirii (“The Diary of Happiness”), a complex symbiosis of narrative, memoirs, and ethics. Its moral and esthetic purpose is to offer a difficult and provocative solution for the recovery of the high manifestations of humanity: freedom, religious beliefs, truth, right, beauty, and love.
