Abstract

The short story Lighea belonging to Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa was significantly received in the Romanian cultural press. Interpretations and decipherings were advanced of the symbols enclosed in this famous text. We will pass in to review here a number of three such hermeneutical endeavours. The first interpretation, Lighea  as  the symbol of an aristocratic world at its crepuscule, is owed to Alexandru Paleologu and was offered in „Steaua” magazine (Cluj) no 10-11/2005. Another interpretation, Lighea as the symbol of a devouring passion, belongs to Mircea Muthu and was published in „Convorbiri literare” (Iasi) no 9/2005. The third interpretation, which belongs to us, was published in „Amfiteatru” magazine (Bucharest) no 10/1982. Here we see Lighea as paradigm of contrary coincidences, namely a convergence of  the miraculous with rational, as a way of rationally attesting the possibility of the miracle.
