Abstract
An overview of France’s sociocultural, political and economic configuration involves delving deep into an age profoundly marked by the overseas territorial expansions, in order to understand the effect the contact between civilizations has had, over the centuries, both among the settlers and the colonized people.
Therefore, we propose yet again, as a discussion topic, the founding of the former colony Saint-Domingue, which constitutes a special case since it was the first black republic to know freedom, a right earned through the slave revolt against the forces deployed on the island by Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte.
Our perspective should be dual; it should encompass the Europeans’ point of view who, in those days, were the ones writing the world’s history, through their geographical discoveries, as well as the point of view of the ones subject to the colonization process, a process not nearly as harmonious or peaceful as some references would have us believe.
REZUMAT
O privire de ansamblu asupra configuraţiei socio-culturale, politice şi economice a Franţei contemporane impune incursiuni în epoca atât de profund marcată de expansiunile teritoriale dincolo de mări, pentru a înţelege ecourile pe care contactul civilizaţiilor îl are peste secole, atât în rândul coloniştilor, cât şi al celor colonizaţi.
Propunem aşadar o readucere în discuţie a întemeierii fostei colonii Saint-Domingue, caz aparte prin statutul de primă repunblică neagră liberă, câştigat prin revolta sclavilor împotriva forţelor dislocate pe insulă de Împăratul Napoleon Bonaparte.
Viziunea trebuie să fie una duală, atât din punctul de vedere al europenilor, care, în acele vremuri, scriau istoria lumii, prin descoperiri geografice, cât şi a celor care au făcut obiectul procesului colonizării, nici pe departe atât de armonios şi paşnic precum ar dori unele referinţe bibliografice să îl prezinte.
