Abstract
A much debated upon topic, the influence upon William Shakespeare’s works of the French philosoper Michel de Montaigne is the basis of this article. This influence is evident in most of the plays of the English playwright who, undoubtedly, was familiar with the works of the latter. The attitude of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, as displayed in the play with the same title, is undemined by his arrogance and self-centeredness, traits of character studied minutely by the French phillosopher Montaigne. It is the author’s claim that the acts of the Prince have brought about the death of all his beloved ones and that they were mainly prompted by his egocentrism and arrogance as well as by his permanent avenger attitude. Not only did his attitude not solve anything, it transformed an initial tragedy into the end of several families.
Key words: tragedy, motivation, justice-maker, wrong-doer, self-centeredness.
Cuvinte cheie: tragedie, motivatie, justitiar, nedreptate, egocentrism.
