Abstract:
The present article begins with the unanimously admitted consideration that translations can’t create a literature, but they can contribute to its development. The article is structured in a theoretical part and a practical one. In the theoretical part there are presented some basic principles regarding translations by comparing the books Saying Almost the Same Thing, by Umberto Eco and How I translated Faust by Lucian Blaga. The practical part aims to analyze two translations of Goethe’s Faust, one by the author Lucian Blaga and the other one by Ştefan Augustin Doinaş, this way trying to prove the relativity, approximation, gains and losses, difficulties and compensation possibilities of a translation.
