Abstract
The town of Alba Iulia is located in the territory of Transylvania (“beyond the forests”) in Romania. The town was founded on the ruins of the former Roman castrum Apulum. “Alba” is seen as a linguistic latinization of the appellative albus “white”. The word albus is reflected in the onomastic basis of the various place names that got Alba Iulia in the course of its eventful history: the Slavonic adjective bel- “white” is the toponomastic basis for Belgrade “the white castle/town”, Hungarian fehér- “white” in Gyulafehérvár “the white town of Gyula”, German “weiß” in Wizzenburg/Weissenburg. Why “white”?
According to REICHENKRON (1965) “white” represents a loan-word of an oriental Turkish metaphor, ak- “white” in the sense of “in the west, the west”. Accordingly Belgrade is located from the Oriental position “in the West”. The situation is similar to the Turkish Akdeniz “the white Sea”/the Mediterranean (that is known not to be white), which from the Orient lies in the west, like the town of (Spain) Casablanca “the white house/castle”. Die Stadt Alba Iulia liegt in Transilvanien („Jenseits des Waldes“), Rumänien. Die Stadt wurde auf den Ruinen des römischen castrum Apulum gegründet. „Alba“ ist eine Latinisierung des Appellativums albus „weiß“. Dieses albus spiegelt sich in der onomastischen Basis der verschiedenen Ortsnamen, die Alba im Verlaufe seiner wechselvollen Geschichte erhielt: das slavische Adjektiv bel- „weiß“ bildet die toponomastische Grundlage von Beograd „die weiße Stadt/Burg“, ungarisch fehér- „weiß“ in Gyulafehérvár „die weiße Stadt des Gyula“, deutsch „weiß“ in Wizzenburg/Weißenburg. Weshalb „weiß“?
Laut REICHENKRON (1965) ist „weiß“ ein Lehnwort einer orientalisch-türkischen Metapher, türkisch ak- „weiß“ in der Bedeutung von „westlich, im Westen“. Entsprechend liegt Belgrade, vom Orient ausgesehen, „im Westen“. Dieselbe Situation gilt für türkisch Akdeniz „das weiße Meer“/das Mittelmeer (das aber nicht als „weiß“ bekannt ist), das vom Orient aus im Westen liegt, wie auch die Stadt (spanisch) Casablanca „die weiße Burg/Haus“. Es gilt, REICHENKRONs These zu überprüfen!
Rezumat
Oraşul Alba Iulia este situat în teritoriul Transilvaniei („dincolo de păduri”) în România. Oraşul a fost construit pe ruinele fostului Roman castrum Apulum. „Alba” este considerat drept latinizarea apelativului albus „alb”. Cuvântul albus se reflectă în baza onomastică a variatelor nume de locuri care au dus Alba Iulia în cursul istoriei plină de evenimente: adjectivul bel- „alb” este baza toponomastică pentru Belgrad „castelul/oraşul alb”, cuvântul maghiar fehér- „alb” în Gyulafehérvár „Gyula oraşul alb”, cuvântul german „weiß” în Wizzenburg/Weissenburg. De ce „alb”?
Conform lui REICHENKRON (1965) „alb” este un cuvânt împrumutat din metafora orientală turcă, ak- „alb” în sensul de „în vest, vestul”. Prin urmare Belgrad este situat din poziţie orientală „în vest”. Poziţia este similară cu cea a turcescului Akdeniz „Marea albă”/ Marea Mediteraneană (care este cunoscută ca nefiind albă), care din Orient este situată în vest, precum oraşul Casablanca (Spania) „casa/castelul alb(ă)”. Teza lui REICHENKRON poate fi aplicată pentru a verifica!
