Abstract
This chapter is part of a much larger work designed to point out how Eugen Ionescu’s literary creation is received and interpreted by Romanian critics. Critics’ embrace or loathing of absurd theatre has proved to be quite the interesting phenomenon, especially due to this opposition of critical dogmas in the 6th and 7th decades. Ionescu’s skill and worth as a playwright are barely recognized and this fact is sadly accepted as such. Chapter I deals with general theoretical reference points of understanding and perceiving theatre, placing the work face to face with its audience.
